Councillor Miguel (Mike) Deguevara

Councillor Mike DeGuevara has resided on the Westbank Reserve for 25 years. Serving as a Councillor from 1998-2000, this is DeGuevara’s second term participating as an elected representative.

FIRST TERM ACCOMPLISHMENTS (1998-2000)

• Asserted aboriginal land rights by harvesting timber within traditional territories
• Increased the Reserve land base by 2600 acres
• Participated in the Self-Government Agreement (SGA

SECOND TERM GOALS (2004-2006)

• Focusing on the needs of youths & elders
• Development of Gallaghers Canyon Lands
• Increased funding for post-secondary education programs
• Creating employment opportunities with WFN based business training initiatives
• Encouraging full membership participation in the SGA implementation process

As a father of two children, DeGuevara understands the importance of becoming involved in the process of self-government. He states, “The next few years are crucial to the future of all our families. It is an extremely important and critical time in our history. The laws and policies that are being developed through our SGA will affect us forever.”
