Westbank First Nation Mission Statement

"To provide and develop local community governmental services in the most efficient and effective manner for the overall betterment of the Band membership and the community."

Westbank First Nation is a self-governing nation. The Westbank First Nation Self-Government Act (Bill C-11) received Royal Assent in Ottawa and became law on May 6, 2004. The Order-In-Council bringing WFN Self-Government into force took place on April 1, 2005.

 

WFN must operate according to the terms and conditions of the Westbank First Nation Self-Government Agreement which is a bilateral agreement with Canada. Clear dispute resolution mechanisms are in place and any law, action, or decision can be challenged in court. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the Canadian Human Rights Act both apply. The Westbank First Nation Constitution, developed by WFN Members, sets out how the community is governed and exercises its jurisdiction. It provides for democratic and legitimate elections and government, internal financial management, accountability to Members, conflict of interest rules, law enactment procedures, land rules, referendum procedures, etc.

Westbank First Nation has developed one of the most comprehensive sets of community bylaws/laws in Canada that cover the development and regulation of reserve lands. The development of WFN laws is an ongoing process.
