WFN has two full-time Law Enforcement Officers (LEOs), Dan Heaton and Richard Johns. They work closely with the RMCP - and in particular with the three RCMP First Nation Policing officers who are dedicated to WFN Lands - enforcing WFN, provincial and federal laws on WFN Lands.
LEOs are designated Peace Officers under both WFN law and the Criminal Code. This means that they are able to issue fines and penalties under WFN laws as well as detain and arrest when necessary. Both LEOs have extensive training not only in law enforcement, but medical response and fire suppression.
The LEOs patrol WFN Lands in marked vehicles that are equipped with computers, communications, medical supplies and fire suppression equipment. They can be reached 24/7 at 250 717 6147 (Richard) or 250 863 8247 (Dan). In an emergency situation, the LEO can act as the first point of contact to the RCMP. LEOs can also be contacted regarding the following:
The mandate of the LEOs is to contribute to making WFN Lands a safe and healthy place to live and work. Accordingly, in addition to their policing duties, the LEOs are also actively involved in the community attending functions and events, interacting with youth, participating in community safety groups and providing training.
