Westbank First Nation ("WFN") is an economic leader among First Nations in Canada, building wealth for the community and valuing the role of business in generating its independence, wealth and long-term success. With an entrepreneurial-spirited Membership, a history rich in culture and tradition, diversity in employment, strong commercial and residential sectors, along with healthy forestry and tourism industries, and an Economic Development Commission providing linkages between government, members and businesses, WFN continues to bring forward annual statements showing healthy profits and capital re-investments back into the community.
With 840 band members, 10,000 non-band member residents, 4,500 homes, and over 400 businesses spread across 1.4 million square feet of shopping and entertainment space, WFN is bustling with activity and new construction 365 days per year. In the past 10 years, WFN has issued a half billion dollars in development permits, and out of 162 municipalities in B.C., WFN is rated the 61st largest, at $1.416 billion, in terms of property assessment. GDP in 2009 was a half billion CAD, steadily increasing, and over $100 million in GST and PST are being raised from WFN lands annually.
WFN is also a part of, and works together with, the Okanagan Nation Alliance, consisting of seven other neighbouring First Nation communities extending into the United States, asserting and advancing Title & Rights over Okanagan Nation territory lands. The Okanagan Nation works on issues of environmental, water, animal, family and child protection, and restoring salmon to the waters.
