There’s a new opportunity available for Indigenous artists across Canada. The Okanagan Indigenous Music and Arts Society (OIMAS) has launched the “Honouring our Stories” Artistic Mural and Beautification Project, in partnership with Kelowna’s Gospel Mission and Sncewips Heritage Museum.

sensisyusten House of Learning Virtual Learning in Effect February 2, 2021
Per direction of the Westbank First Nation, sənsisyustən House of Learning will resume virtual lessons this week on February 2, 2021. This is being done on a precautionary basis to keep our Nation members and school community members safe as the Nation and community is experiencing an increase in COVID-19 case numbers.

BC Housing: Proposed Cougar Road Supportive Housing Project Deferred
At the December 14, 2020 Council meeting, WFN Council reviewed the BC Housing proposed re-zoning/land use amendment for the identified project at 3235 Cougar Road. Upon review, Council determined to defer the application as received to 2021 for the purposes of conducting greater consultation

WFN Extends Rental Increase Freeze to July 1, 2021
In recognition of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, WFN has further extended its rental increase freeze from January 1, 2021 to July 1, 2021. Rental increase notices that were previously resolved by WFN Council to become effective on January 1, 2021, will now become effective on July 1, 2021.

Firefighters’ 23rd Annual Food Drive Continues Through COVID-19 Pandemic
West Kelowna Fire Rescue will continue their 23rd Annual Holiday Food Drive in support of local food banks. This year due to Provincial health guidelines, the fire stations will be drop off sites for residents to leave their non-perishable food donations from December 1 to 15th, 2020.

Indigenous Construction Students Complete Energy-Efficient Shed At Westbank First Nation
It’s a challenging time for many as people continue to grapple with the coronavirus pandemic. But on one tiny, yet significant square of the world, Indigenous students are prepping for a new normal by training in clean energy construction. From Sept. 21 to Oct. 29, 10 Indigenous construction students worked to build an energy-efficient shed on Westbank First Nation (WFN).

The Child Advocacy Centre is collaborating with Westbank First Nation to be the fifth partner of the organization. Launched on Jan. 1, 2020, the centre is a child-friendly facility that supports children and families impacted by child abuse and neglect.

Westside Salvation Army's Kettle Campaign Kicks Off
Bells will be ringing across the Central Okanagan this season during the Westside Salvation Army’s Kettle Campaign. The campaign kicked off on Friday, Nov. 13, with Westbank First Nation Councillor Lorrie Hogaboam, West Kelowna Mayor Gord Milsom, and Peachland Mayor Cindy Fortin making the first donations.

Masks Mandatory at WFN Buildings and Facilities
Effective today, a non-medical mask or face covering is required to be worn in all Westbank First Nation (WFN) operated spaces and facilities. This includes the WFN Government/Lindley Building, Community Services, Youth Centre, Public Works/Utilities office, and facilities such as the gymnasium.

Innovative FortisBC Training Program Builds Construction Skills, New Lives
A new group of FortisBC graduates are ready to hit the job site thanks to a special program. FortisBC along with Okanagan Training Development Council (OTDC), and program host, Westbank First Nation, recently graduated 10 new participants from Residential Energy and Efficiency Works (REnEW), a program that provides entry-level construction skills and energy efficiency training to people that have faced barriers to employment.

Please be advised of the following advisory for Kelowna Regional Transit System - Route 25 (25 East Boundary Detour). Carrington Road will be closed for the day due to road construction. The 25 East Boundary route will be on detour for October 22, 2020, and all bus stops on Carrington Road will be closed for the duration of the road closure.

Advisory Council Elected By WFN Residents
In accordance with Westbank First Nation (WFN) Advisory Council Law 2017-10, October 15, 2020, saw a new Advisory Council voted in for a three-year term by WFN residents. The 2020 – 2023 Advisory Council includes new representatives Steven Gilroy (Lakeridge District) and Michael Trenn (Lakeshore District), and returning representatives Ludwig Teichgraber (East Boundary District), John Cole (Prairie District) and Rick Ould (Old Okanagan District).

LIFTED - Boil Water Notice for Tsinstikeptum I.R. No. 10
The Boil Water Notice issued yesterday for WFN's IR 10 has now been lifted and operators will soon be taking the signs down. New samples came back clean, allowing the boil water notice to be removed.

Wild animals in B.C. can carry many disease and parasites without significant effects. However, there are some diseases of high priority that B.C.’s Wildlife Health Program must monitor and track. These diseases include Bovine Tuberculosis (BTb) and Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD).

West Kelowna Urgent and Primary Care Centre Opening October 5 2020
The West Kelowna Urgent and Primary Care Centre (WK UPCC) will open October 5, 2020. The centre is designed to improve the quality of primary care services for people living in West Kelowna, Westbank First Nation and Peachland, by improving the access to primary care that includes urgent primary care services required within 12-24 hours, and by providing ongoing longitudinal primary care for underserved populations in the area.

Okanagan College's 12th Annual Youth Exhibition Powwow Goes Virtual
When the pandemic struck, organizers of the popular Youth Exhibition Powwow at Okanagan College (OC) in Kelowna knew they would have to adapt. Each year, for the past 11 years, the event has drawn crowds of hundreds – sometimes more than a thousand – to OC’s courtyard for a day of celebrating, learning about and engaging with Indigenous knowledge and culture.

BC Housing's Proposed Cougar Road Supportive Housing Project on WFN Lands - Update in Advance of Oct
During their September 9, 2020 meeting, Westbank First Nation (WFN) Council resolved to provide initial consideration to an application for a Land Use Amendment/Rezoning application for Lot 37-2-2 at 3235 Cougar Road. The applicant is seeking to utilize a WFN Member property which could potentially be sub-leased to them by the current lessee, for the purposes of constructing permanent supportive housing.

From September 24, 2020 to November 13, 2020, Old Ferry Wharf Road will be closed, except for local traffic, while the construction of a new sanitary sewer takes place

Road Improvements at Carrington and Butt Road
There will be ongoing road improvement works beginning Friday, September 18 and continuing to the end of November 2020. Identified works include the completion of a roundabout at the Carrington and Butt Road intersection, implementation of sidewalk and bike lanes, improved street lighting, and utility upgrades.

In recognition of International Overdose Awareness Day, Westbank First Nation (WFN) staff and community members gathered together to raise awareness to this epidemic. Staff hosted a Drive/Walk-Thru BBQ to support discussion and awareness, as well as made harm reduction kits available for those in need.
